The Philadelphia Phillies acquired outfielder Hunter Pence from the Houston Astros in exchange for 3 minor leaguers and a 4th prospect to be named after the season. This trade could have a major impact on the NL East race where the Phillies currently have a 5 game lead over the Atlanta Braves with 57 games left in the regular season. Hunter Pence is expected to bat 5th in the batting order. His move sent Domonic Brown back to the minors, making Ben Francisco his backup.
Hunter Pence is a solid performer and a constant 20/20 threat. He had his best season in 2010 with 93 runs, 25 HR, 91 RBI and 18 SB. This season he was on pace for 76 runs, 17 HR, 96 RBI and 10 SB. His career BA is .290.
When we re-evaluate Pence’s fantasy value we have to consider that he is joining a much better lineup and moves to a more hitter-friendly ballpark. My estimate, or amended projection if you like is 79 runs, 18 HR, 101 RBI and 10 SB.
If you own Hunter Pence in any of your leagues you should be able to reap the benefits of this trade. If you are in need of stolen bases you should keep an eye on Houston Astros outfielder Jason Bourgeois who could give you 20 bags for the remainder of the season.
