Adam Dunn and the Chicago White Sox agreed on a 4-year
contract, which pays him $56 million. The lefty joins an otherwise right-hander
heavy lineup. The slugger will be a middle-of-the-lineup batter but it remains
interesting to see where he will end up in the batting order with Paul Konerko,
Carlos Quentin, and Alex Rios also on the roster. The veteran can play first
base as well as outfield but will likely become the designated hitter on the
South Side.
Last season Dunn batted .260 with the Washington Nationals
and had 85 runs, 38 home runs and 103 RBI. He has a lifetime batting average of
.250 and hit 38 or more longballs in 7 consecutive seasons. Dunn spent 10
seasons in the National League with the Cincinnati Reds, Arizona Diamondbacks
and Washington Nationals. The Chicago White Sox will be his first team in the
American League.
Dunn's acquisition puts a question mark over Carlos
Quentin’s future with the White Sox. Regardless, Chicago’s lineup will be
ridiculously strong in 2011 and they will be contending again.
Fantasy Perspective
I have never been a big fan of Adam Dunn as a fantasy player
but I guess I just have never given him the credit he deserves. He’s very
productive and has constantly been delivering plenty of homers and RBI year in,
year out. In 2011 his statistics should look very good again and moving to a
home run friendly ballpark will likely help him to improve them. If you can afford to put up with a low
batting average, bearing in mind that he’ll now face better pitching in
general, then you get great value in round 6-8 of the draft.
New York Mets Perspective
I don’t really think that the Mets will miss the slugger.
His slugging percentage against them might be low at .375 but he has 12 walks
in 18 games and 10 runs, the most against any opponent.
It looks like the Washington Nationals will have to settle
for the 5th spot in the NL East for the 4th consecutive
season. This leaves the Mets battling for 3rd in their division with
only the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves looking like contenders right
now.
