The Cincinnati Reds have placed Johnny Cueto on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder inflammation. The move was made retroactive to August 16. Micah Owings, who was activated from the DL last week, takes over Cueto’s spot in the rotation. In 24 starts Cueto has a 8-10 record with a 4.61 ERA. On July 1 his ERA was an impressive 2.69 but Cueto has not been able to record any wins since then.
Fantasy Impact: After a good first half of the season Cueto has done more harm to his fantasy owners than good. Only stash him if you have a DL spot available. Right now he has much more value in NL-only leagues than mixed leagues. The waiver wire is not blessed with better options, so I suggest you read “Pitch Or Ditch” in order to find starting pitchers with favourable matchups.
Aaron Cook of the Colorado Rickies has been put on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain. The starting pitcher could return in 3 weeks but might well be out for the rest of the season. Adam Eaton or Josh Fogg is expected to replace Aaron Cook in the rotation. Aaron Cook has 10 wins in 25 starts with a 4.47 ERA but has suffered losses in each of his outings during August.
Fantasy Impact: Hang on to Cook if you can but his inconsistency virtually makes him a risky start every time he pitches.
Kyle Lohse of the St. Louis Cardinals is another starting pitcher that ended up on the 15-day disabled list this week. Lohse suffered a strained left groin and will be replaced by Mitchell Boggs. It is the second time this season that the pitcher had to go on the disabled list. Kyle Lohse is 5-8 in 18 starts with a 4.67 ERA.
Fantasy Impact: Feel free to hang on to Lohse in deep mixed leagues and NL-only leagues, especially since you will probably not be able to find a better pitcher on waiver wire.
After Johnny Cueto, whom I mentioned above, the Cincinnati Reds have also sent Aaron Harang to the 15-day disabled list. The starting pitcher needed surgery after an emergency appendectomy and will miss the remainder of the season. Aaron Harang has a 6-14 record in 26 starts with a 4.21 ERA and struck out 142 batters in 162.1 innings. Harang pitched particularly well in August where he recorded a 2.86 ERA in 4 starts and 27 Ks in 25 innings.
Fantasy Impact: Needless to say that Harang needs to be released in all leagues and formats.
Here are a few players who are expected to come off the DL soon:
Justin Upton (ARI), Outfielder, might return August 28. Tim Wakefield (BOS), Starting Pitcher, expected to start August 26. Carlos Zambrano (CHC), Starting Pitcher, expected to start August 25. Joe Saunders (LAA), Starting Pitcher, expected to start August 26. Dave Bush (MIL), Starting Pitcher, expected to start August 27. Jeff Suppan (MIL), Starting Pitcher, expected to start August 25. David Wright (NYM), Third Baseman, eligible to return September 1. Brandon McCarthy (TEX), Starting Pitcher, might be activated for September 1 start.
