Florida Marlins’ Matt Lindstrom was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained elbow. That means the closer will be out for more than a month. Dan Meyer and Leo Nunez in particular will take care of closing out games in the meantime.
Matt Lindstrom has 14 saves and 2 blown opportunities this season but his 6.52 ERA and 1.90 WHIP are nothing to cheer about for fantasy owners.
Fantasy Impact: Matt Lindstrom will obviously miss a considerable amount of time, 6 weeks at least. Stash him if you can. Due to a lack of closers on waiver wire you will have to try your luck with Meyer and Nunez.
A shoulder injury will likely keep starting pitcher Chris Young of the San Diego Padres out until after the All Star break. Wade LeBlanc has been recalled from the Minors to fill the empty spot in the rotation.
Chris Young’s season is as inconsistent as can be. Most noticeable is the contrast between home games (2.61 ERA) and away games (7.82 ERA), which results in a total ERA of 5.21. He has 4 wins in 14 starts and struck out 50 hitter in 76 innings.
Fantasy Impact: Chris Young is no automatic starter in fantasy baseball in my opinion but can’t be ignored when having a game lined up in pitcher-friendly PETCO Park. If you’re lucky you’ll be able to find Rick Porcello (DET), Randy Wolf (LAD), Andy Pettitte (NYY) or Hiroki Kurada (LAD) on waiver wire. If not, feel free to check the daily issue of “Pitch Or Ditch” in order to find a pitcher who has a favourable matchup.
Adrian Beltre of the Seattle Mariners has not been put on the disabled list yet but this only seems to be a question of time as he will miss about 6-8 weeks with a shoulder injury. Jose Lopez will be the beneficiary and move to third base.
Beltre isn’t exactly enjoying a very productive season, batting .259, with 36 runs, 5 home runs, 31 RBI and 9 stolen bases.
Fantasy Impact: Beltre won’t return until the last month of the season, hence you might want to part ways with him altogether. Possible replacements are Kevin Kouzmanoff (SD), Mark Teahen (KC) or Emilio Bonifacio (FLA).
A sprained left elbow got starting pitcher Josh Outman on the 60-day disabled list. Oakland’s southpaw will need Tommy John surgery and is likely out for the season.
Josh Outman put together a very decent season. He had a 4-1 record in 12 starts, a 3.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP.
Fantasy Impact: It is fairly safe to say that Josh Outman should be dropped in all leagues and formats.
This is Kojima Uehara’s second trip to the disabled list this season. The starting pitcher of the Baltimore Orioles suffers from elbow tendonitis and could miss up to a month. David Hernandez has been recalled to the rotation.
Uehara has only 2 wins in 12 starts, with a 4.05 ERA and 1.25 WHIP.
Fantasy Impact: Uehara is only a low-end option as pitcher but worth stashing if you have a DL spot available. I have him on the watch list in all my leagues and I am always on the lookout for a favourable matchup in order to pick him up.
St. Louis Cardinals’ Khalil Greene is headed back to the 15-day disabled list with reoccurring social anxiety disorder. It is unclear how much time the infielder will miss.
Greene is struggling mightily this season, batting just .200 and accounting for 18 runs, 5 homers, 19 RBI and 2 stolen bases.
Fantasy Impact: Stash Khalil Greene for now if you’re in a very deep mixed league or NL-only league. Decent shortstops are hard to find so you might have to settle for the likes of Alberto Callaspo (KC) or Orlando Cabrera (OAK) as replacements. If Greene has 3B eligibility he could be replaced with Kevin Kouzmanoff (SD), Mark Teahen (KC) or Emilio Bonifacio (FLA).
Here are a few players who are expected to come off the DL soon:
Ervin Santana (LAA), Starting Pitcher, might return for July 3 start. Raul Ibanez (PHI), Outfielder, likely to return July 3.
Erik Bedard (SEA), Starting Pitcher, out until at least July 6.
Josh Hamilton (TEX), Outfielder, might return July 4.
