Injury Report

Jake Peavy, Starting Pitcher of the San Diego Padres, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained tendon in his ankle. This move is retroactive to June 9. Peavy is expected to be out for at least a month but could miss up to 3 months of the season.

After a slow start in April, Jake Peavy was living up to his potential in May. He is 6-6 for the season with a 3.97 ERA and 1.19 WHIP. He recorded 92 Ks in 81.2 innings.

Fantasy Impact: You obviously want to keep Jake Peavy in all leagues and formats for now. As long-term replacements you might still be able to find Josh Outman (PIT), Rick Porcello (DET) or Hiroki Kuroda (LAD) on waiver wire. For short-term fixes please check out “Pitch Or Ditch”.

Another starter who found himself on the 15-day disabled list this week is John Maine of the New York Mets. The pitcher was complaining about shoulder fatigue. This move was made retroactive to June 7.

In 11 starts Maine recorded 5 wins, a 4.52 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 42 Ks in 61.2 innings.

Fantasy Impact: Maine is a low-end option at best and has some appeal in NL-only leagues. I’m pretty sure you can find better short-term fixes as well as replacements.

The Kansas City Royals put their outfielder Coco Crisp on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore shoulder. Tug Hullet was called up to replace him but it’s Mitch Maier who is expected to see increased playing time.

The leadoff hitter has 30 runs, 3 home runs, 14 RBI and 13 stolen bases this season, while batting a rather poor .228.

Fantasy Impact: Coco Crisp has some value in AL-only leagues and deep mixed leagues. Feel free to drop him altogether if you can get Michael Bourn (HOU). Players like Gary Sheffield (NYM) or Hideki Matsui (NYY) could be used as a short-term fix.

Kelvim Escobar is headed back to the disabled list because of shoulder tenderness. The Starting Pitcher of the Los Angeles Angels, who already spent some time on the 60-day disabled list earlier this season, is expected to be activated on June 22.

In his only start in 2009 Escobar allowed 2 runs in 5 innings and threw 5 strikeouts.

Fantasy Impact: Kelvim Escobar’s value was very limited to begin with. He will likely return as set-up man but could also close out games for the Halos. Unless he’ll get some save opportunities he will have little to no value at all.

Here are a few players who are expected to come off the DL soon:

Casey Kotchman (ATL), First Base, expected to return June 16.
John Smoltz (BOS), Starting Pitcher, might return for June 18 start.
Kazuo Matsui (HOU), Second Base, expected to return June 16.
Eric Stults (LAD), Starting/Relief Pitcher, might return for June 20 start.
Glen Perkins (MIN), Starting Pitcher, expected to return for June 16 start.
Matt Harrison (TEX), Starting Pitcher, expected to return for June 17 start.

That is a tough decision really.
Jay Bruce had a decent week but can you put up with his BA? He can't hit LHP!!!!!
Ryan Ludwick looks the most dispensable but he is a bit on fire now.
Pablo Sandoval doesnt actually beat out any of the other two but he has a very good BA.

If you drop Bruce you lose HRs and runs and get rid of a bad BA
If you drop Sandival you give away BA
If you drop Ludwick you dont give away anything the others can't compensate.

I see Ludwick more as trait bait than someone you drop.

Besides, is Zimmerman really more productive than the others? I havent started Zimmerman in appr. 2 weeks.

No one in my league has claimed Peavy yet, so when Aramis comes off the DL, I may try to stash him on my DL.

Someone in my league waived Ryan Zimmerman, I put in a claim but I am low on the priority list. I'm thinking I'll drop Pablo Sandoval, Ryan Ludwick or Jay Bruce for him. What do you think?
