The New York Mets had to place Shortstop Jose Reyes on the 15-day disabled list with a calf injury. This move is retroactive to May 21. Reyes is expected to play when he’s eligible to come off the DL on June 5. Ramon Hernandez is playing shortstop in the meantime, but don’t even think about picking him up. His batting average is .167.
Jose Reyes is batting .279 on the season and has 18 runs, 2 home runs, 15 RBI and 11 stolen bases.
Reyes, one of the best shortstops in the league, most certainly needs to be stashed in all leagues and formats. Jerry Hairston Jr. (CIN), Marco Scutaro (TOR), Felipe Lopez (ARI) look like very good short-term fixes.
One reason for Carlos Quentin’s disappointing season could be his foot injury, which eventually earned him a spot on the 15-day disabled list. Quentin, of the Chicago White Sox will most likely be activated on June 10. Brian Anderson will replace him in the outfield.
Carlos Quentin is only batting .229 this season and produced 20 runs, 8 home runs (none in May), 20 RBI and 1 stolen base.
Quentin should be kept in all leagues and formats despite his struggles. I have him in two leagues and picked up Gary Sheffield on both occasions. If you’re lucky you could get Denard Span (MIN) or Willy Taveras as temporary replacements.
Grady Sizemore is the second first-rounder, after Jose Reyes, to end up on the 15-day disabled list this week. The Cleveland Indians outfielder suffers from an elbow inflammation.
Sizemore has not lived up to the expectations yet, scoring 29 runs, 9 long balls, 31 RBI, 7 bags and an especially disappointing .223 batting average.
I haven’t seen a timetable for his return yet but I expect him to play as soon as the 15 days are over. If he needs surgery he'll be out until late-July.
Another week, another pitcher on the disabled list. Brett Myers, who suffered a hip injury, may well miss the rest of the season. Watch for J.A. Happ to stay in the rotation of the Philadelphia Phillies.
Brett Myers has 4 wins in 10 starts this season, with a 4.66 ERA and 1.35 WHIP.
If you can’t find any long-term replacements like Rick Porcello (DET), Zach Duke (PIT) or Chris Volstad (FLA), you might find some short-term options in the daily article “Pitch Or Ditch”.
Stress-related issues are the official reason for moving First Baseman Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds on the 15-day disabled list. It is absolutely unclear when he’ll return. Ramon Hernandez will likely move over to first base.
Joey Votto is batting a massive .357 this season and has 23 runs, 8 homers, 33 RBI and 2 stolen bases, which makes his temporary absence a hard pill to swallow for fantasy owners.
Ramon Hernandez sounds like a decent replacement while you hold on to Votto, but teammate Jerry Hairston Jr. is a better option. You might also want to have a look at Russell Branyan (SEA).
Jason Bartlett of the Tampa Bay Rays was one of the best players in all of baseball this season, before a sprained ankle caused him to go on the 15-day disabled list. Even worse, it is doubtful whether the shortstop can return on June 10, the first possible day he can be activated.
Bartlett has 32 runs, 7 home runs, 30 RBI, 14 stolen bases and averages .373 at the plate.
Fantasy owners hope for a speedy recovery, as shortstops are hard to come by. You may find Marco Scutaro (TOR), Felipe Lopez (ARI), Stephen Drew (ARI) or Jhonny Peralta (CLE) on the waiver wire. Anyone else would be nothing but damage limitation.
Baltimore Orioles’ first Japanese-born player Koji Uehara suffered a hamstring injury and had to go on the 15-day disabled list.
Uehara has 2 wins in 9 games, a 4.09 ERA and a WHIP of 1.20.
Uehara is most definitely a player you should have on your watch list. He can be a contributor in deep mixed leagues and AL-only. It’s no big secret that I really like him.
Here are a few players who are expected to come off the DL soon:
Travis Hafner (CLE), First Baseman, might return June 3.
Chris Iannetta (COL), Catcher, might return June 9.
Jeremy Bonderman (DET), Starting Pitcher, could rejoin the rotation any day now.
Joakim Soria (KC), Relief Pitcher, expected to be activated June 2.
Kelvim Escobar (LAA), Starting Pitcher, expected to start June 6.
Pat Burrell (TB), Designated Hitter, might return after this weekend.
Vicente Padilla (TEX), Starting Pitcher, scheduled to start June 2.
Elijah Dukes (WAS), Outfielder, expected to return June 2.
