The Chicago Cubs placed Aramis Ramirez on the 15-day disabled list because of a dislocated shoulder. Ramirez will miss at least 4-6 weeks. Mike Fontenot will see extended playing time at third base.
Aramis Ramirez has 8 runs, 4 homers and 16 RBI this season while batting .364
Ramirez should be kept in all leagues of course. Mike Fontenot’s value remains unchanged and should only be used in deep leagues or NL-only leagues.
A sore right shoulder got Joakim Soria on the 15-day disabled list. While this looks like a precautionary move it is uncertain when he will return. This is a huge blow for fantasy owners, myself included, as Soria is one of the best closers in the game.
Joakim Soria converted all 7 of his save opportunities and has an ERA of 2.08.
A new closer has not been named yet but Juan Cruz seems to be the favourite.
Joakim Soria has to be kept in all leagues and Juan Cruz should be picked up immediately, if you haven’t done so already.
The Detroit Tigers put Carlos Guillen on the 15-day disabled list because of a sore shoulder and a sore Achilles tendon. He is out until at least late May.
Guillen is hitting a meagre .200 and has 11 runs, 6 RBI and 1 stolen base in 90 at-bats. The Tigers recalled Clete Thomas and Jeff Larish from the minors.
Guillen has multiple position eligibility which makes him valuable in AL-only leagues and deep leagues. Put him on DL if possible but don’t expect any miracles from him.
The New York Yankees placed their catcher Jorge Posada on the 15-day disabled list. Posada suffered a hamstring injury and will be out until at least late May.
Backup catcher Jose Molina suffered a strained quadriceps and joined Posada on the disabled list just 3 days later.
The Yankees recalled catchers Francisco Cervelli and Kevin Cash to fill the roster spots.
Posada was off to a good start batting .312, scoring 10 runs, hitting 5 home runs and batting 20 runners in. He should be kept in all formats.
Rick Ankiel, outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals landed on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised shoulder and a whiplash. The injury occurred when he crashed headfirst into a fence while chasing down a ball.
Rick Ankiel is batting .247 and has 11 runs, 2 home runs and 11 RBI. He is expected to be out until late May.
Ankiel is a low-end outfielder at best. Drop him if you can find an adequate replacement on waiver wire.
Florida Marlins starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez suffered a shoulder sprain in his latest start and will miss at least two months.
Sanchez has 1 win in 6 games and an ERA of 5.79.
The right-handed pitcher struggled in his last 3 games after allowing only 5 runs in his first 18 innings.
Oliver Perez of the New York Mets can’t really say that his season is much of a success so far. He lost his spot in the rotation and was placed on the 15-day disabled list with patellar tendonitis. This move is retroactive to May 3. Jonathon Niese has been called up to take over the spot in the rotation.
In 5 starts Perez recorded one win and an ERA of 9.97.
Perez’ role is very uncertain once he comes off the DL. The Mets use J.J. Putz as set-up guy and K-Rod as closer. I wouldn’t be surprised if he actually returned to the rotation. Feel free to stash him in deep leagues or NL-only leagues as long as there is uncertainty surrounding his future role, but he will have little value if he ends up in the bullpen.
On a more positive note, here are a few valuable players who will come off the disabled list soon:
Stephen Drew (ARI), Shortstop, might return on May 11.
Daisuke Matsuzaka (BOS), Starting Pitcher, could rejoin the rotation after this weekend.
Travis Hafner (CLE), First Base, eligible on May 14.
John Lackey (LAA), Starting Pitcher, could start on May 15.
Ervin Santana (LAA), Starting Pitcher, could start on May 14.
Chien-Ming Wang (NYY), Starting Pitcher, could rejoin the rotation after May 12.
Josh Hamilton (TEX), Outfielder, expected to rejoin the Rangers on May 12
