Niclas Havelid for Anssi Salmela trade

The Atlanta Thrashers traded defenseman Niclas Havelid to the New Jersey Devils for defenseman Anssi Salmela. Both teams will benefit from the trade; New Jersey in the short-term and Atlanta in the near future.

Havelid has recorded 2 goals and 13 assists in 63 games with Atlanta this season. His average time on ice is 20:52 minutes.

Niclas Havelid will join a New Jersey defense without a superstar that has been defensively sound but lacks some offensive contribution. Havelid may be past his prime but he will improve the Devils’ defense. I think he will be used on the second line, power play and penalty kill and log the approximate same amount of time as in Atlanta. His rating should get a boost and he will be expected to be a presence on the blue line and score the occasional point.

There is no need to pick him up yet unless you’re in a very deep league. Feel free to put him on your watch list though. His fantasy value should increase with this trade.
