This is a Top List of the best players per position for the week from 14/02/09 – 21/02/09:

Centers:

1) Jonathan Toews (CHI)

He scored 7 points in 3 games, 4 goals and 3 assists, recorded a +6, had 4 penalty minutes, 1 power play goal and assist and 11 shots. He really contributed to every category.

2) Tomas Plekanec (MTL)

He has to take more responsibility since Robert Lang is out for the season. He didn’t have a good season so far but he may be picked up more after this week: 3 goals, 1 assist, 1 power play goal and 10 shots in only 2 games.

3) Pavel Datsyuk (DET)

He’s on a hot streak, having scored in his previous 4 games. Last week he accumulated 1 goal, 4 assists, all of which on power play, and 11 shots.

4) Mike Richards (PHI)

It’s his game against the Islanders that stops him from being ranked higher. 2 days later against the Rangers he had a short handed goal and another one in a 5 point performance against Buffalo.

5) Henrik Sedin (VAN)

He’s more of a playmaker than goal scorer and recorded 2 goals, 4 assists, +3, 4 penalty minutes, 1 power play assist, 1 game winning goal and 8 shots. Bear in mind that he is playing for a contract!

6) Eric Staal (CAR)

He certainly had a busy week with 5 games being scheduled. 1.4 points per game is something you can expect from a player of his qualities. Two of his 4 goals were game winners and he averaged no less than 6.2 shots per game.

7) Joe Thornton (SJ)

He’s on a hot streak right now, having scored in his past 4 games. 3 of his 4 assists came on power play. He spent 6 minutes in the penalty box in last week’s games. If only he shot more, and subsequently scored more goals.

8) Jarret Stoll (LA)

In 4 games he had 5 points, 4 penalty minutes, 4 penalty points and 14 shots.

9) Anze Kopitar (LA)

One might think the Kings are a powerhouse but they just happened to score a lot in last week’s 4 games. Kopitar had 6 points, 3 power play goals, one game winner and 16 shots. In two of these 4 games he didn’t score at all.

10) Patrick Marleau (SJ)

Even though he’s been demoted to the 3rd line his productivity is till tops. In last week’s 3 games he had 5 points, 1 power play goal, 1 short handed goal, 1 game winning goal and 11 shots. He’s on a 4 game scoring streak.

Wings:

1) Ilya Kovalchuk (ATL)

Hot hot hot! We’re talking a six game scoring streak here. He’s averaged 2 goals, 3 points, 1 power play point, 0.3 game winners and 4.3 shots.

2) Johan Franzen (DET)

I have him on one of my teams but benched him for as long as he had a day-to-day tag attached to his name. That way I missed out on a 3 point power play performance. In the other game this week he was far less effective scoring just one goal on 2 shots.

3) Martin Havlat (CHI)

The 3rd liner had 7 points and a +7 in 3 games last week. One of his two goals was a game winner and he had 15 shots.

4) Andrei Kostitsyn (MTL)

The Canadiens may be on a cold streak but that doesn’t stop some players from having hot streaks though. Kostitsyn is on a 4 game scoring streak. In his last 3 games he averaged 1 goal, 1 assist, 1 power play point and 4 shots. Surprisingly he can still be picked up in some leagues.

5) Dustin Brown (LA)

Every once and again I have to bench this guy but he has certainly done well last week. He is on a 4 game scoring streak, including 2 goals and 4 assists. He had 4 penalty minutes, one power play goal, 4 power play assists and 18 shots.

6) Henrik Zetterberg (DET)

He’s one of the most gifted players in the league and one of the reasons why Detroit’s power play was so effective last week. 4 of his 5 points came on the power play and one of them was the game winning goal against the Ducks. He also averaged 4 shots.

7) Teemu Selanne (ANA)

Selanne is doing quite alright since he returned from injury. Last week he averaged 2 points per game, 1.3 penalty minutes, 0.7 power play points and 3.3 shots.

8) Bryan Little (ATL)

This was quite a week for the winger. He scored 3 goals, 3 assists, had a +3, 1 power goal and one power play assist.

9) Patrick Kane (CHI)

I liked this guy last year and I am glad that I got him for one of my teams this year. He had 1 goal, 4 assists, +3, 2 power play points and 15 shots in Chicago’s three wins of last week.

10) Nik Antropov (TOR)

Playing in Toronto means a bad +/- rating this year but Antropov had a +3 last week. Additionally, he scored 3 goals, 2 assists, 1 power play goal and had 14 shots.

11) Alex Burrows (VAN)

Alex who? Then maybe you should add the Canucks’ first liner quickly. He’s on a 3 game scoring streak which includes one goal and 5 assists, a +4 rating, one short handed assist and 13 shots.

12) Alexander Ovechkin (WAS)

The probably most exciting player just saw a 10 game scoring streak come to an end. The numbers look still impressive: 1.2 goals, 0.3 power play goals, 0.5 game winning goals and 6 shots.

13) Drew Stafford (BUF)

He is one of the players I have come to admire but I seem to be clearly in the minority. Nonetheless he had 2 goals, 2 assists, 2 power play goals, 1 power play assist and 13 shots last week.

14) Rick Nash (CLS)

He had 7 points in 4 games, 2 power play assists and 16 shots.

15) Alexander Semin (WAS)

Lucky for him the Capitals played 4 games last week because he was fairly unproductive in his last two games. It still adds up to 1 goal, 3 assists, +4, 6 penalty minutes, 2 power play assists and 14 shots.

16) Daniel Sedin (VAN)

He’s had a very solid week, accounting for 2 goals, 3 assists, +3 and 14 shots.

17) Zach Parise (NJ)

The winger has a pretty good season and a productive week. He’s averaged a point, 1 power play point and 6.3 shots last week. His +/- isn’t too impressive of late though.

18 Marian Hossa (DET)

His fantasy value for last week comes down to one category, penalty minutes. He had 15 of them. He also had 2 goals and a +2 in 3 games.

19) Wojtek Wolski (COL)

He may be eligible for the center position soon. His season is pretty disappointing but last week was one of his better displays. 2 goals, 3 points, +5, 1 power play assist, 1 game winner and 10 shots.

20) Devin Segotuchi (SJ)

He quite improved his penalty time last week, when he had 8 minutes in 3 games. He had a +3 rating, 1 goal, which was on power play, 1 assist and 12 shots.

Defensemen:

1) Nicklas Lidstrom (DET)

I still believe he is the best defenseman in the league. He had 2 goals and 4 assists last week. 1 goal and 4 assists came on their stellar power play. He also had 4 penalty minutes, 1 game winner and 8 shots.

2) Rob Blake (SJ)

He has a very good season and so was his recent week. 1 goal, 3 assists, +6, 4 penalty minutes, 2 power play assists and 9 shots.

3) Ron Hainsey (ATL)

He’s actually quite good if it wasn’t for his +/- rating. He did record a +2 though last week. He also had 4 points, all of which came on the power play, and 4 penalty minutes. He is still available in many leagues.

4) Brian Rafalski (DET)

He’s another beneficiary of Detroit’s successful power play of last week, in which he had 3 assists. In total he had 5 assists.

5) Kevin Bieksa (VAN)

He scored 2 goals last week. One of it came on the power play and turned out to become the game winning goal. He also had a brilliant +4, 7 penalty minutes and 10 shots.

6) Zdeno Chara (BOS)

Boston’s enforcer had a very solid 2 games last week with a goal and assist and 7 shots.

7) Pavel Kubina (TOR)

His two points came all on power play last week. His rating of 3 and 4 penalty minutes weren’t too bad either.

8) Mike Green (WAS)

He saw and 8 game scoring streak come to an end at the beginning of the week but he has still been one of the better defensemen. Most noticeable are his 17 shots in 4 games. He also had 2 points, all on power play, and 4 penalty minutes.

9) Jaroslav Spacek (BUF)

I keep asking myself whether I should pick him up and I think I will. He had 2 goals and one assist last week, including a power play goal and assist. 3.3 shots per game aren’t too bad for a defenseman either. He is still available in most leagues.

10) Sheldon Souray (EDM)

He had a point in almost every game last week, 4 penalty minutes, 2 power play points, 18 shots and a game winning goal. The only thing I don’t like about him is his +/- rating.

Goaltenders:

1) Alex Auld (OTT)

Who would have guessed a Senator would top this list But Auld had 2 wins in 3 games, 1 shutout, 1.08 goals against and a save percentage of .956. Don’t just go adding him though because he is still the backup to Brian Elliott.

2) Christobal Huet (CHI)

I would honestly love to be in a league where the Frenchman is still available because it seems that is still the case in many leagues. He had 3 wins last week, including a shutout, 1.66 goals against and a save percentage of .931.

3) Tomas Vokoun (FLA)

His week was very good. It may have only been 1 win but that was a shutout. In 3 games he allowed 6 goals and saved 94.5% of the shots.

4) Martin Biron (PHI)

He recorded 3 wins in 3 games with 2 goals per game and a save percentage of .949.

5) Cam Ward (CAR)

He played no less than 5 games last week in which he came out victorious 3 times. His goals against average of 2.21 and save percentage of .912 were a little better than usual, but it’s the shutout that brings him into this ranking.

6) Roberto Luongo (VAN)

He still does not have a shutout since he returned from injury a month ago. He won all three games last week with a goals against of 2.27 and a save percentage of .927.

7) Ty Conklin (DET)

It still surprises me how well he is doing this season. He got the wins against Nashville and Anaheim, allowed 2 goals per game and stopped 47 of 51 shots.

8) Andrew Raycroft (COL)

The Avalanche certainly have a goalie problem and that does include Raycroft but he did do pretty well last week when he recorded 3 wins. The 2.58 goal average and .917 save percentage are good for Raycroft.

9) Steve Mason (CLS)

He’s cooling down a little but still a candidate for the Vezina Trophy. Last week he was on the winning side 3 times out of 4. 2.16 goals against and a .917 save percentage are more than respectable.

10) Marty Turco (DAL)

I thought of him as overrated for quite some time now. He had a solid week though in which he had 2 wins, 2.55 goals against and a save percentage of .925.
